Vantage Point

Star-studded raised $22.8 million over the past three days making it this weekend’s clear winner.  The film, starring Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox, gives viewers multiple perspectives of a presidential assassination attempt.  Although the Pete Travis movie received less than positive reviews, the action thriller easily outearned its nearest competitor, The Spiderwick Chronicles.

The only other new entry in the Top Ten was Michel Gondry’s .  The Jack Black/Mos Def comedy opened in limited release and averaged over $5000 per screen.  Aside from Vantage, every other chart topper earned less than $4000 per theater.

Jon Stewart, Academy Awards

Last night’s Best Actor categories were as predictable as the Best Actress races were surprising.  Yesterday’s ceremony was also as disappointing as it was routine.

For months now, we’d been hearing about several plans being orchestrated for the .  If the writers’ strike was still in effect, the producers swore the telecast would continue with packages that celebrated Oscar’s 80-year history.  Interestingly enough, even with the scribes back at work, the show was still horribly written and crammed with unnecessary fillers.  (Even I could have penned ‘the always Fantastic…Jessica Alba’.)

As it was, the winners appeared to have been given less time last night to accept their awards than ever.  (Which may or may not have been a good thing.)  But did really need to rush his lovely speech to his mother?  Did the organizers have to reshow the previous awards presentations?  Did the AMPAS President really need to waste time explaining how the selection process is done??

I Know Who Killed MeLindsay Lohan - the recent focus of a nude pictorial - has just now earned a heap of awards for her turn as a stripper.  Unfortunately, it’s not the kind of merits she was hoping to achieve.

While Hollywood will be celebrating the Best of the Best today, Lohan will have to deal with being this year’s Worst of the Worst.  Her last completed film, , garnered a record eight statues at yesterday’s 28th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards.  Up until now, the most any film had attained was seven.  (Both Showgirls and Battlefield Earth have reached that mark.)

Lohan, like , earned three awards yesterday for their acting work.  Lohan tied herself for Worst Actress while also scoring one for Worst Screen Couple (since she played two characters).  Murphy snagged his trophies for his three roles in .  (Dreamgirls seems oh so long ago now.)

Congratulations to this year’s winners…

Sex and the CityFinally - a more substantive glance at the upcoming Movie!

While I will undoubtedly watch the release, I must say the newest trailer gives the film a much darker tone than I would have liked to see.  (You can view it for yourself, after the jump.)  Is it because the show is best served on the small screen?  Should the series only be viewed in 30-minute snippets?  Is the teaser simply a bad representation?  (Oh, I hope so.)

Regardless, the clip does give us a few juicy tidbits:

  • Apparently Mr. Big’s (full) name is John James Preston.  (I think I like him better when he’s not an actual person.)
  • It looks like Steve may have cheated on Miranda.  (The Steve I know would never do something like that.)
  • Commitment-phobe Samantha may be wandering from Smith Jerrod.
  • Charlotte is indeed pregant.  (She adopted that kid for nothing.)
  • And last but not least, Carrie’s planned wedding to Big falls apart?

Be looking for SATC to hit theaters this May 30.

Collin FarrellJust last week we told you about the interesting plan devised for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the movie Heath Ledger was working on when he died.

A trio of A-list actors - Jude Law, and Johnny Depp - will be combining their efforts to fill the void left behind.  Given the magical nature of the film, the substitutes would be able to appear as different versions of Ledger’s character.

In an interview with Australia’s Herald Sun, Farrell commented on his invitation and the unusual circumstances:

“It makes me feel uncomfortable to think about it too much and to get into it really here but it’s an incredibly painful honour to have, you know, and an honour I wish wasn’t bestowed but an honour nonetheless.

It’s about getting Heath’s work out there, get his work out there, he’s too good for any of his work not to be seen, you know, and I’m really keen and looking forward to doing it and just doing the best job I can do.”

Farrell’s recent project, In Bruges, is still currently in theaters.

Where the Wild Things AreScores of parents have used Where the Wild Things Are to help put their children to sleep.  Unfortunately, a viewing of ‘s film adaptation could reportedly leave those same children with a few nightmares.

Jonze, the Oscar-nominated director behind Being John Malkovich, has been in the process of bringing Maurice Sendak’s children’s book to the big screen.  Unfortunately, poor test screenings may have forced Warner Bros. to push the film’s release date to 2009.

According to internet reports, children were so frightened by the scary images, they left the theater crying.  (Well that’s no good.)  One tester supposedly said, “The things are not cute. Max comes off a bit weird and off-putting. He slaps his mom! And he seems confused and not charming at all.”

Well, if it makes Spike feel any better, I thought would do great things with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - and that movie creeped me out as well.  So if nothing else, at least he’ll be keeping good company.
